5 Reasons Your Business Needs a Well-Designed Website

There are 5 reasons your business needs a well-designed website. Let's talk about them.

Is your current website costing your business money? You don’t just need a website, you need a well-designed website.

From time to time, I encounter people who are on the fence about redesigning their website. They aren’t sure it is worth the money.

But is that true? Is it ok to continue on with a poorly designed website? Or is your current website actually costing you more money than a redesign would?

Let’s look at 5 reasons why a well designed website matters for your business.

(1) Your clients are judging you by your website

We have all heard and probably said, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” It's a true statement. I’ve read a lot of good books over the years with bad covers.

While it is true for books, it’s not true for websites. I don’t keep scrolling on badly designed websites and neither do you.

Websites are different than books

Book and website comparison. Websites are different than books. People judge websites by their cover.

Books are largely made up of words that combine to tell a story. It's the story that makes or breaks a book, not the cover.

That is not true of a website. Websites are not just pages with words on them. They are a combination of words, colors, videos, interactions, and animations. They are drastically different from books.

That’s why badly designed websites don't get the benefit of the doubt like badly designed book covers. People don’t read the first chapter of a badly designed website to see if it is any good. They judge the website by its cover.

How long does it take for a customer to make a judgment?

Blink of an eye graphic. 50ms is all it takes for a person to judge your website design.

Research shows you have 50ms to convince a person to keep scrolling. That’s how long it takes to blink your eye! That’s all the time you have. In a blink of an eye your potential client / customer has already made up their mind about you and your business.

(2) Your website is your first impression

According to a  2018 Pew Research Center Study, 81% of Americans rely on their own research before making purchasing decisions. That research usually begins with a search on the internet.

Think about it: potential customers are searching the internet right now for your product or service. If you come up in the search results and they actually click on your result, all you have is 50ms to make a good first impression.

I don’t know about you but I want the first impression a potential customer or client has of my business to be positive. I want them to think I can meet their needs. Instead of thinking that I might get scammed.

A well-designed website will go a long way in convincing potential customers you are capable of meeting their needs and solving their business problems.

(3) Your website is your credibility

Speaking of scams, in this day and age, a poorly designed and maintained website does nothing but hurt your credibility. The last thing you want is for a potential customer or client to think you are a scammer.

While you might not be a scammer and your business might be the best in its category, if your website design doesn’t reflect your abilities, you aren’t going to convert visitors into clients.

Consider the following websites. They both sell candles, but which do you find more credible? Which company would you be more trusting of and actually enter your credit card information?

I am going with the first design all day. It looks modern, updated, and more visually appealing. I would feel comfortable providing them with my credit card information.

(4) Your website is your best sales associate

Your website is your best sales team graphic.

You need to think of your website as a sales associate. But not just any sales associate. I am talking about the best sales associate on your team. They never eat, sleep, take a break or go on vacation. They are there working for you 24/7 365 days a year.

(5) Your website is a lead generating machine

Leads are crucial to sales. Without leads, you cannot sell because you have no one to sell to. Your website can generate a lot of leads for you. It can be a lead magnet.

But that potential lead magnet can also be a lead repellent. Remember, your website is the first impression your potential customer has of your business. It is your initial credibility builder. If your potential customers' first encounter with you is less than optimal, you won’t have the chance to sell to your dream client. They’ll press the back button before you can deliver the pitch.

Conclusion

Don’t judge a book by its cover doesn’t hold true on the web. In reality, it's the opposite. People are judging you and your business by your cover.

Is your website ready to sell to your dream client? Is it a lead magnet or a repellent?
